Narrowing down thoughts.

Alright so after the last meeting we got some good ideas flowing. We need to narrow down who we are most interested in bringing in to speak, so please take the time to search through some designers and comment about who you are most interested in hearing. We want to make this coming year pretty active with the small things. Continuing the every 2 weeks meetings, but in between meetings have an activity. This activity would be a local design studio/agency tour, a workshop, group critique, or any other thing you are interested in attending.

Workshops : Workshops were great last year but attendance needs to be higher this year. We need to figure out the workshops you are interested in.  Feel free to add to this list on the comments, and let us know if you know much about these topics and might be interested in helping in a workshop.

Recruiting : We need to get people to join, and with the officers narrowing down a calender of events that will help drive people to join, we need other ideas as well. Some things mentioned were a monthly or bi-monthly newsletter showing and talking about the events AIGA are having, discuss about design topics, etc. This would be handed out to boost knowledge about what we are doing and wish people to join in on the fun. Plus this would put our design skills to good use with a monthly publication. Also we brought up creating AIGA ICT student branch business cards for group members. This would give us something to hand out during interviews, meeting new professionals, or other situations. This would only be available to those who pay to join AIGA.

Trip : It was voted on and decided that a mid October trip to New York is happening. We will get together a list of design agencies and professionals in the area soon to begin planning out events in New York. This trip would cost a decent amount with flying and board, but we need to think about fund raising events to boost revenue.  Some thoughts were having a show during final friday and selling graphic prints. We were thinking themes for the event could make for a fun night, so also we would like to hear your thoughts on themes.

Show ideas : Quotes, Music (yes it can be this broad), Graphic Styles (constructivist, Bauhaus, swiss design, art nouveau), Typography, ect.

Also please let us know what type of design you are most interested in.

What’s on the agenda? EVERYTHING.

by

For those who haven’t heard, we met the other day and officers were elected so we could get the ball rolling on the 2010-11 agenda for AIGA. The officers are as follows:

President: Benjamin Redington, Senior

Vice President: Rory Harms, Junior

Secretary: Roger Strunk, Senior

Treasurer: Landon Barton, Senior

A meeting was also called among the local professional community to alert them of our active status, and this year we hope to see more interaction with them as they reactivate the Wichita Professional Chapter of AIGA. From what I understand, the meeting went well and their is optimism among the professionals for what we are trying to do with AIGA in Wichita.

Now we are tasked with coming up with an agenda for the 2010-11 academic year, and everything is on the table. We need ideas for activities, workshops, events, trips, tours, speakers to invite, fundraising, etc. For those who kept up with the old blog, Ben has already posted some of his thoughts there, and there will no doubt be more voiced in upcoming meetings. Suggestions will also be tossed around on facebook. Make sure you are heard.

In addition to that, the next priority is recruiting new members. Hopefully, this year we’ll see our group extend its membership beyond the senior graphic design majors. I would like to see it include a significant number of sophomores and juniors from the design program, in addition to students from other disciplines that have some relationship or interest with graphic design. So spread the word. And by all means, share any of your ideas for recruiting with myself or other officers.

I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas, and hopefully I’ll see you at the next meeting. If you can’t make it, be sure to e-mail us or leave comments on this post and I’ll make sure your ideas are voiced during discussion.

Stay informed. Share ideas.

A facebook group has been created, where members can keep up with announcements and engage in discussions concerning AIGA. Several topics have been posted to the facebook group’s discussion board, and everyone is encouraged to join the group and make suggestions that will guide decisions concerning what we do in 2010-11.

News and important info (like minutes from the meetings) will also be posted on this blog, and an e-mail subscription is available for those posts if you sign up for it in the menu bar to the right.

We also have a twitter account for AIGA news, if you want to follow us there.
